Adapt or fail. The dinosaurs died because after the sudden climate change they didn’t have time to adapt to the new environment. Adaptation is everything, the species or the person that is able to adapt faster to new situations and new changes are the one that will survive at the end. Running taught me that If you do not adapt, you will not be able to go through a training schedule mainly a training program for preparing for a marathon or 50k race. Life is unexpected, and while everything looks so beautiful on paper, in practice and in our daily lives it is not. Its is true that you need to know your theory and it’s the application of the theorems that we have practical results. Let me give you an example. Today I had programmed in my training schedule for the 50k race that is going to be held in Vasa Kellakiou 20 of May 2017, to run 1 hour. Today though I had to do some personal business in Nicosia so I got home late, and when I got home I had to do some house building related chores which took me about 3 hours and so I did not have the chance to go do my training. So what do I do now start crying or get upset or get depressed or get sad? No, I won’t be I will adapt and evaluate. Mind you when I first started running I would follow my training programs to the last instruction, and if I couldn’t do all the exercises or couldn’t do the tempo times I was supposed too I would get mad and frustrated. Now I know better, it does worth it. Now if I don’t run a particular day, then I will switch. For example today I was pushing a wheelbarrow filled with construction bricks up and down for almost three hours! I had to carry a wheelbarrow full of 9 blocks which were about 100 kilos all together for 40 to 50 meters. Now that’s exercise. Pushing a wheelbarrow actually use nearly all of your muscles. So today I considered being this my weight lifting day and tomorrow I will go and run my 1 hour running. No harm was done, and everything is fine. Adaption of my training plan also taught me a valuable lesson. I took these lessons I learned from my running and applied them with a more general algorithm to the rest of my life. I realised that by able to adapt I managed to reduce stress and get more things done. Now when I construct a training plan I always have two and sometimes three alternative programs just in case something happens, and I won't be able to do the scheduled exercise or running regime. You should look at your training program weekly wise and try to have alternatives that will satisfy your weight lifting and running goals of the week. One thing you need to be adamant thought is that your long run should always be on the same day your race is, try and keep that as constant as possible. If you can't run for example your long run on Saturday where the race day will be and run it Sunday or vice versa no harm done, but try to simulate as much as possible the race conditions. Well, that’s what I had for you today, I hope I helped with my adaptation realisation. Have a healthy and happy day My warmest Regards Andreas Michaelides Thirsty4health.com
Χαιρετισμούς Αντρέας Μιχαηλίδης Thirsty4health.com There are a dizzying array of drinks and powders on the market that promise to keep you hydrated and boost energy levels during your runs. But you need more than just water and sugary calories for optimal performance. Every bead of sweat that drips from your face contains a mixture of electrolytes—in layman’s terms, “positively or negatively charged ions that conduct electrical activity,” says Jonathan Toker, Ph.D., an organic chemist and elite trail runner who founded the hydration-products company SaltStick. “They are necessary to help maintain proper fluid balance, [and] perform functions involved in muscle contraction and relaxation.” When electrolyte levels drop too low, performance can suffer. Signs of this include muscular fatigue leading to the dreaded “bonk,” cramping, poor thermoregulation that makes heat less tolerable and feelings of disorientation. In extreme cases, consuming a large volume of water without sufficient electrolytes can lead to dangerously low levels of sodium in the blood, a potentially life-threatening condition known as hyponatremia. “The electrolytes lost in the highest concentrations through sweat are sodium and chloride,” says Maria Dalzot, a sports dietitian and competitive mountain runner based in Bellingham, Washington. “These electrolytes must be tightly regulated for the body to function properly.” Potassium, magnesium and calcium are also lost in sweat, though “in such small amounts that they are not of concern while exercising and can be easily replaced in your everyday diet.” Some (though not all) experts say that replenishing those lesser electrolytes becomes vital during sustained, multi-hour efforts. Says Toker, “With a finite amount available in the body for easy access, cumulative losses over time for an athlete running four, six or 17 hours will affect calcium and magnesium levels in the blood and inhibit performance.” Stay Balanced The power of electrolytes to help you kick up dirt at a faster clip was illustrated by a 2015 Scandinavian Journal of Medicine & Science in Sportsdouble-blind study, which found that athletes who supplemented with sodium chloride—table salt—and other electrolytes in addition to a sports drink before and during a half-Ironman improved their race times by an average of eight percent. They also experienced less of a drop in body weight compared to those who took a placebo. The scientists additionally reported that salt supplementation worked to stimulate thirst, which encouraged subjects to drink more and, in turn, maintain better hydration. A recent study in the journal Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercisefound that taking electrolytes before your run can also enhance fluid retention, thereby improving rehydration. Watch the Clock If you’re out for a leisurely run lasting less than an hour, your electrolyte stores should be adequate without supplementation. “Replacing salt losses becomes more of a concern when you push past the 60-minute mark, particularly if you’re sweating greatly,” says Toker. Crunch the Numbers Sweat production, and therefore electrolyte loss, is influenced by a number of factors, including run duration and intensity, genetics, clothing and environmental conditions like humidity. “A less fit runner will lose more electrolytes compared to an avid runner who is more efficient at maintaining electrolyte homeostasis,” says Dalzot. What’s more, some people’s sweat is naturally saltier. The most precise way to calculate your electrolyte needs is through a sports lab that offers custom sweat tests. The white coats will measure your electrolyte loss during exercise, and use that data to create a personalized hydration and electrolyte plan. Alternatively, online companies, such as Levelen and Infinit, provide DIY kits that let you gather up your own salty sweat and send it in for analysis. Or just go by trial and error. According to Toker, the sweet spot for most athletes is to replenish between 50 and 80 percent of electrolytes lost during exercise. “Higher replacement usually causes stomach issues, and lower replacement usually causes performance deterioration,” he says. As a starting point, consult the chart below (provided by Toker), which indicates the average concentration of electrolytes in sweat, and experiment to determine what works for you. Average Electrolytes Lost in 315 mL Sweat: Sodium (mg): 220 Potassium (mg): 63 Calcium (mg): 18 Magnesium (mg): 8 Think Beyond Sports Drinks Most of those neon-colored drinks contain no more than 200 milligrams of sodium, and so don’t come close to matching what endurance athletes lose through their sweat glands. If you’re serious about maintaining a healthy electrolyte balance, look to other sources, including salt capsules, electrolyte tablets and dissolvable powders and enhanced gels and chews (see sidebar). Don’t forget that “real” food can be a good source of sodium as well. If you just finished sweating buckets on a multi-hour epic, it’s O.K. to reach for those salty, crunchy snacks you are craving: pretzels, nuts, potato chips, even a cold slice of pepperoni pizza. Cramping Your Style Before you go stuffing your pack full of bananas, understand that potassium’s role in staving off cramps has largely been overblown. “Cramps are most likely caused by overstressed muscles,” says Dalzot. Significant dehydration, poor fitness and electrolyte imbalance, particularly excessive salt loss, can play a role as well. Runners can also go overboard on electrolytes during taxing runs. “If you do choose to take salt tablets, be sure to drink a sufficient amount of water,” warns Dalzot. “A large intake of sodium without water can cause bloating as water moves from the bloodstream to dilute the sodium concentration. Sodium also triggers thirst and drinking more than necessary can cause unpleasant stomach sloshing.” Cyprus Ultra Marathon - Race distances for all abilities. What do I think when I run.
Well, there are a lot of answers to that question. For someone to be able to give an original reply, it must fulfill one crucial role. Running should be part of you, it should be a lifestyle. When I first started running I wasn’t thinking anything; I was too focus on putting one leg in front of the other and making sure that I finish the race and have enough energy to get into my car and drive home safely Of course, back then the distances I was running were short, max I did in training the first six months of my running career was 10k! It was when I started running longer distances like half marathons and marathons that I realized that being focused on your breathing and your running technique for hours was a deal breaker. That’s when I realise that in order not to go crazy I had to occupy my mind with things that would make my mind wander off in other greener pastures. When I ran my first marathon in 2011, the classical marathon, it starts from the city of Marathon. Thus, it's named, and we finished in Athens, I applied something that I still do sometimes when I am too bored while running for a long time. Yes, at times I get bored while running. What I do is this. I associate every kilometer I finish with my age. So when I finish the first km I start thinking where were I when I was one year old, where my parents were, where I was born, how I was born and other thoughts like that. When I finished my first marathon, I was 36 years. At some point when I finished km number 37, I couldn’t remember something because, duh, it was in the future for me so I was thinking the stuff I could do in one year from now, places to visit and so on. That was in the past. Now my way of thinking while I run it changed considerably. Before I will either think too much of the past or overthink the future which a lot of the times would stress me out. For example, I be running a half-marathon I be on the 5k mark and I would think how many more km I have something that will make me sad and disappointed, or I would believe that I only made 5k thus far and also throw me off. Now I don’t have that problem anymore. Now instead of thinking of past or future I just remain in the present situation, I train myself to think and act in the present. It doesn’t take long for my mind to wonder after focusing on the moment, and it starts to give me thoughts and feedback I never thought It was in me. Now when I run I solve problems that I have at my work, I write articles and books in my head. I review and self-critic myself of things I did and how well I did them. Anything and everything come to mind and its good because the only thing that doesn’t pop into my mind when I am in that state is how many km are left in the race, not my tempo is not fast enough, running worries, anxieties, and stressful thinking is not there anymore for me. Sometimes I will get into a dialog with a real person either at work or home or an imaginary one. After I finish arguing, I am so surprised to see that a considerable amount of times has passed but for me, it was only minutes. How cool is that? Well, I hope I helped you with this little story of mine. Have a healthy and happy day My warmest Regards Andreas Michaelides www.thirsty4health.com
1. Lean In
The main thing to focus on when running uphill is to lean into the ground and use your forward momentum. For some runners, this is second nature. On steep grades, Sage Canaday, who won Utah's mountainous Speedgoat 50K , looks like he is nearly kissing the trail. How can you get similarly intimate with the terrain and reap the uphill benefits? First, look down at the ground in front of you (which you should be doing anyway to watch your footing on trails). Second, tilt your centre of gravity forward, aiming to mirror the gradient beneath your feet. For example, when I’m on a 10 percent grade, I think about leaning 10 percent forward from centre. On steeper grades, I go even farther forward. Finally, when running with this technique, think of your legs less as powerful pistons, and more as tools to keep you from falling face-first into the ground. With each step, your momentum while leaning forward will carry you up the mountain—your legs merely keep the forward motion going. This technique takes practice, but staying too upright is the number-one mistake that most self-proclaimed “bad hill runners” make. Concentrating on leaning forward is the first step to becoming a mountain goat. 2. Relax If this advice is good enough for Frankie Goes to Hollywood, it’s good enough for everyone. Frankie got it right when they sang, "Relax, don't do it"—when it comes to pushing yourself up a hill, anyway. Running uphill, tension makes every step harder, forcing you into a hike that much sooner. Relaxing is simple. First, and most importantly, focus on letting your leg muscles loosen whenever your leg is not in active contact with the ground. The step-to-step cycle of contract-loosen-contract-loosen will delay accumulation of fatigue in your legs and allow you to push longer. Second, while leaning forward, concentrate on letting your lower back release tension. A slight forward lean on uphills can immediately be counteracted by a lower back that springs you upright every chance it gets. Finally, never contract your arm muscles. Just let them flop around like the somewhat useless (running) appendages they are. While the arm swing is an important component of running, a good uphill arm swing should feel very similar to having a couple wet noodles going back and forth at your side. 3. Hike with a purpose Hiking is the dirty secret of the trail-running world. You almost never see a magazine cover with someone walking. But like pooping, everyone hikes, even the pros! That said, there is often a massive difference between how people hike. And that difference can turn something fast and efficient into a waste of time. So how do you hike with a purpose? Alex Varner uses perfect hiking form at the World 100K Trail Championships. Photo by Joel Pellicier First, as with running uphill, lean forward. Even farther forward. Even farther. Perfect. When power-hiking uphill, you want to feel like you are almost parallel to the ground (even if you are actually not even close). Second, unlike running uphill, focus on using your arms. The ideal technique is to place your hands on your quadriceps closer to the hip than the knee. Each time your leg pushes off, use your arm to push down and give you an extra lift. Finally, alternate uphill running and purposeful hiking for maximum efficiency. Like running uphill, power-hiking is hard, and mixing it up will allow you to go farther, faster. My preferred breakdown is 10 seconds running, 20 seconds hiking, but any mix can work. As for when you should start hiking, that is a personal choice. Experiment with what works for you. Use these few simple steps, and you’ll be loving climbing in no time! Or, at the very least, with your new uphill speed, the suffering will be over way sooner.
Have you ever saw elite marathoner runners? Did you notice that they have stiff legs and a skinny upper body? IT make sense right? The skinniest you are in the upper body the less weight you have to carry and less stress on the legs.
I mean who needs a strong upper body in running anyway all you need is two good strong legs, and you are literally set to go right? Well WRONG a big emphatic NO. When we are walking and also running literally all of our muscles are working harmonically to achieve one unique goal which is to move our body in the direction we chose in our head. Some muscles are bigger and work more, and some muscles are smaller, and they work less. Each muscle out of the 654 that the human body has contributed so out of body does what our brain commands. There are a lot of people, and I was one of them that will tell you that running is the legs work not the abs, or the triceps or chest muscles, they don’t matter they don’t see the connection. Well, I saw the link through serious injuries and lots of failed races which made me realise that if I am doing all my training right, (tempo, track, hill repeats, long runs and so on) then why do I have leg injuries and most importantly while I don’t finish the races? I am a slow learner I admit that I am not the smarter guy out there, but once I get something that’s it stays with me for life. Once I click and see the importance of something and how it benefits me or how much it doesn’t benefit me, then I am like a switch I turn to the right and healthy side. (sorry Darth wider) Like it clicked that smoking was killing me so I stop cold turkey like it clicked that being overweight was worst than smoking, I lost 44 pounds like it clicked that eating meat is even most dangerous than smoking I stopped eating meat. It clicked that my upper body has an even more important role to play in my running, and that was the reason I had leg injuries (Illiberal syndrome) and also did not finish the races. See I came to realise that you are as strong as your weakest muscle! You can have strong legs, and you can run a mile under 4 minutes but if the muscles around my diaphragm are not robust enough to help my lungs to provide the oxygen my legs are screaming for then I can only achieve the speed and also the endurance my lungs can accommodate. If I don’t have a fit and strong core and all my abs are not in good shape, then it's only a matter of time when I will lose my balance and stability. That’s what the core does, and all that task will fall on the legs, and usually they fall on the knees and ankles. All our muscles should be in the same level of fitness as our legs. It’s funny how my training programs change over time. When I first started running six years ago I knew nothing, and I was running every day, literally I was running every day, a day without running was a day wasted for me that was my motto. Well, it was until I got a few severe leg injuries and discovered a relaxing day and sometimes two relaxing days are not wasted days but as equally and sometimes more important than running days. Relaxing days give your body the opportunity to rest and repair itself, it literally makes your body stronger so you can go out there on running days to stress it more tear down the new build muscles so in the nest resting days the body will rest and build the new muscles even stronger. That’s what we do, we stress our body, allow it to rebuild and recover and then go out there and stress it even harder! Crazy? Maybe but it sure is fun! Now I have 3 days of sometimes running 4 if I am incorporating hill repeats and 3 times weightlifting and one day for sure to rest and do my running yoga exercises. So this was my wisdom for today, train your upper body too do not train only your legs, you will improve your running performance by improving running energy and consumption and also you will recover faster from hard training sessions. The training sessions can be 2 to 3 times a week 30 minutes each is enough. Well for me anyway others might want to do less or more. Have a healthy and happy day My warmest Regards Andreas Michaelides Thirsty4health.com
Να είστε υγιείς και χαρούμενοι Θερμούς χαιρετισμούς Αντρέας Μιχαηλίδης Thirsty4health.com Have you ever saw how kids run? Have you ever noticed the expressions on their faces when they run? Well if you didn’t then you are missing out on something spectacular. Let me tell you what I see every time I see kids running. Their faces are full of joy, laughter and happiness. I remember when I was a kid running around the neighbourhood nonstop, God I had energy back then. I would always feel so good while running and after I would stop, this amazing feeling of completion and satisfaction will take over my whole soul and spirit and uplift my happiness and pleasure to even a higher level. We are born runners. I strongly know this. Our physiology is designed for this. We had to escape wild animals to save our life’s, we had to cover long distances in search of food and also relocation when the supplies of the area were depleted. We are a species that its whole existence depends on the ability to run. To be able to put one foot in front of the other, chose a destination and a distance, make it our goal and head on to achieve it. That’s why when you run you are getting back so positive advantages, like. Better immune system, more energy, stronger bones and muscles, improved self esteem and improved self confidence. You literally rewrite your body in a cellular level. Every time you run you are building a better younger version of you. Cells that cannot take the burden of accommodating your running regime they are cast away and the body replace them with younger, stronger cells. There is no youth secret, there is running. Running also is the best way to manage stress both physical and psychological. While you run you will find solutions to everyday problems, I personally write books and articles while I run, make imaginary conversations with factual and fictional persons. You should hear my dialogs with Plato and Aristotle for example. I learned through running what it means to set goals, breaking them into smaller goals and achieving them. It tough me self-discipline. It taught me that in order to get things done you need to work methodically and work hard with no excuses what so ever. It keeps me healthy and happy and if you have these two in your life nothing else is impossible and nothing is out of reach. Only thing you need is a pair of good running shoes and your possibilities of expanding your world are endless. Happy running.
